Camille Calegari is a queer artist based in Oakland, CA. Their practice collages found materials with printmaking and DIY techniques. By relearning folk art tradition lost through assimilation and consumerism, Calegari’s work depicts journeys towards self-determination and trans joy.

soft sculpture / 6 x 14 x 18 in / spring 2023

Patchwork vest with high-fired porcelain interior. 
Friendship bracelets, block prints, embroidery, pipe cleaner chainmail, crayola marker, godseyes, trinkets, & tears. 
Love notes and duct tape tightly wrap around the ceramic interior, forming makeshift bulletproof armor.
Child’s size nine.

tenor banjo repaired with scrap / approx. 32 x 12 x 4 in / summer 2024

1930’s Worco tenor banjo. Flange made from broken stooltop, shell made from scrap litho plate. Wheatpasted print on calfskin batterhead, carved from discarded wood. Coupon decals on neck and resonator.
A love letter to a home neglected by a landlord, and to the friends that filled it with music.

suede and metal fox mask with branded & embroidered detail, entirely made from scrap material. 
a fox without a mouth will never know the taste of grapes. a dysfunctional piece about trans sex, dysphoria, and scorning the unattainable body.

experimental string instrument / 12 x 12 x 11 / spring 2022

steel strings stretched across upcycled cooking pot  and rewired personal fan. steam bent plywood blades with burnt detail. spings at three adjustable settings. amplifies the buzzing warble effect of singing into a spinning fan. 
entirely made from scrap, secondhand, and gifted material.
